PCB Stencil Definition
A PCB stencil is a thin steel sheet with many pad holes, specifically designed for SMT. Its primary function is to assist in the deposition of solder paste and to transfer an accurate amount of solder paste to the correct locations on an empty PCB.
FAQs
Why would I need a PCB Stencil? Stencils replace hand soldering of surface mount devices, and the inconsistencies created by hand soldering. They allow for direct placement of solder paste to the surface to be soldered.

While PCB stencils are reusable, they won't last forever. Over time, repeated use and cleaning can cause wear and tear, affecting their precision and effectiveness. If you notice that your solder paste application is becoming inconsistent, it may be time to replace your stencil with your PCB manufacturer.

You actually don't even need a stencil or solder paste, you can install leadless or thermal pad parts by using an iron to apply a small pillow of solder to each pad, coating with a liberal amount of GOOD paste flux, and then putting the part on while heating it with hot air.
